Stake.us is no longer available to customers residing in Illinois starting May 19, 2026, according to a player notice shared with users. Affected accounts are being placed into Redeem Only mode, meaning players can still log in and redeem any remaining balance, but they can no longer play games, make purchases, join promotions, or request postcard codes for free Stake Cash.
The move follows a wider crackdown by the Illinois Gaming Board, which sent cease-and-desist letters to Stake.us and many other sweepstakes casino operators earlier this year. For Illinois players, the practical impact is simple: Stake.us is not fully shutting accounts immediately, but normal gameplay is ending in the state.
What Illinois Players Can Still Do
Stake.us told Illinois customers that affected accounts will remain open only for redemption purposes. That means players should still be able to access their accounts and redeem eligible balances, but the main features of the platform are no longer available.
From today, Illinois users can no longer:
- Play games
- Make purchases
- Participate in promotions
- Request postcards for free Stake Cash
- Generate codes
The notice also says players who believe the restriction does not apply to them can contact support. For example, if a customer no longer lives in Illinois, Stake.us says account access may remain unchanged if the user can verify their location with valid identification.
This is an important detail because many sweepstakes casinos use state restrictions based on residence, location checks, or account information. Players who have moved may need to update their details and pass verification before normal access is restored.
Why Stake.us Is Leaving Illinois
The exit comes after the Illinois Gaming Board sent a cease-and-desist letter to Stake.us on February 4, 2026. In that letter, the regulator said it had reason to believe Stake.us was operating an illegal online casino in the state.
The IGB said it observed Illinois users being offered access to slots, table games, and sports wagering-style products through internet and mobile devices. The regulator also said the games gave users the opportunity to win cash and cryptocurrency.
Illinois law only allows certain licensed gambling activity, such as licensed casinos, sportsbooks, racetracks, and video gaming establishments. The IGB said Stake.us was not licensed or authorized to offer online gambling activity in Illinois. It demanded that the operator block Illinois residents or stop offering cash and cryptocurrency through the service.
Stake.us is not the only platform under pressure. Illinois reportedly sent cease-and-desist letters to more than 60 sweepstakes operators earlier this year. The state has also been considering legislation that could make the legal position around sweepstakes-style gaming clearer.
What This Means for the Sweepstakes Market
Stake.us leaving Illinois is another sign that the sweepstakes market is becoming more state-by-state. Some operators continue to serve certain gray-area markets, while others leave quickly after regulator warnings or new laws.
It was reported in March that Stake.us was the first sweepstakes poker operator to give Illinois players a clear exit date. The same report noted that Stake.us has generally taken a more cautious approach than some competitors, leaving a long list of restricted states as legal pressure has grown.
For players, the key takeaway is to act quickly if you still have a balance. Redeem Only mode is better than an instant lockout, but it still means the normal product is gone. Illinois users should check account messages, redemption rules, and verification requirements before assuming they can withdraw without delay.
For operators, the message from Illinois is just as clear. Regulators are not waiting for a full sweepstakes ban to become law. They are using existing gambling law and cease-and-desist letters to push platforms out now.
Stake.us exiting Illinois today may not be the last move of its kind. If more operators follow, Illinois could become one of the most restricted sweepstakes casino markets in the country.
