New York AG Shuts Down 26 Online Sweepstakes Casinos

On June 6, 2025, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced that her office has successfully stopped 26 online platforms from offering illegal sweepstakes casinos in the state.

Working with the New York State Gaming Commission, the Attorney General’s office sent cease-and-desist letters to operators who used virtual coins—redeemable for cash or prizes—in games like slots, table games, and sports betting.

These platforms have now ended the sale of sweepstakes coins to New Yorkers. The move aims to protect players from unregulated, risky, and potentially rigged online gambling sites.

Why Sweepstakes Casinos Are Illegal in NY

Under New York law, any platform that lets players wager something of value on games of chance counts as gambling—even if it uses “virtual coins.” Sweeps casinos often let users buy coins as part of a package, then use those coins to play games that resemble real casino action.

Players can then exchange coins for money or prizes, such as gift cards. Because these sites are not licensed or audited by the state, they do not have to follow rules that protect consumers. This lack of oversight means players cannot be sure games are fair or that winners will actually get paid.

The Attorney General’s office noted that this creates a dangerous environment for both regular and underage gamblers.

Impact and Next Steps

As a result of the cease-and-desist letters, all 26 identified platforms have agreed to stop selling sweepstakes coins in New York. Among those shutting down are well-known names like Chumba, Luckyland Slots, and MegaBonanza.

Attorney General James urged New Yorkers to avoid these sites and seek legal, licensed options if they choose to gamble. She also highlighted that unregulated sweepstakes casinos can lead to fraud, financial loss, and addiction, especially among minors.

To support those struggling with gambling problems, resources are available through the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Support. Help is just a phone call away via the free HOPEline at 1-877-846-7369 or by texting HOPENY (467369).

The Attorney General’s office will continue to work with state and local partners to monitor and enforce online gambling laws. Players and families are encouraged to stay informed about which sites are licensed and to report any suspicious operations.
